The Alfred Wegener Insititute (AWI) - Section Glaciology

As the Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, the Alfred Wegener Institute is primarily active in the cold and temperate regions of the world. Working together with numerous national and international partners, we are actively involved in unravelling the complex processes at work in the "Earth System". Our planet is undergoing fundamental climate change; the polar regions and the oceans, which play central roles in the global climate system, are in flux. How will planet Earth evolve? Do the phenomena we're observing represent short-term fluctuations or long-term trends? Polar and marine research has always been a fascinating scientific challenge; today it is also research into the future.

German Aerospace Center (DLR) - Earth Observation Center (EOC) and Institute for Software Technology (SC)

The Earth Observation Center (EOC) - that consists of the German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD) and the Remote Sensing Technology Institute (IMF) - is the core institute of DLR’s earth observation activities. The German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD) is engaged in research, product development and providing services based on earth observation data from aircraft and satellite platforms. Results of this work support geo-scientific and environmental research and applications as well as commercial customers and civil security needs. Research projects focus on developing methodologies for generating customized data products as well as on the assimilation of data in models. The major fields of application are land use, the environment, civil security, climate and atmosphere, and geographic information systems.

The mission of the Institute for Software Technology is research and development in software engineering technologies, and the incorporation of these technologies into DLR software projects. Current activities focus on software for distributed systems and intelligent systems, artificial intelligence, software technologies for embedded systems, visualization, data science, and high-performance computing.
